The U.S. President was granted an audience with the Japanese Emperor Akihito at the Imperial Palace at the start of Obama’s Asia tour. The much taller U.S. leader towered above the Japanese head of state. At the Imperial in Tokyo Palace Obama was greeted by school children and a guard of honour.
As part of the day’s engagements Obama played football ( American soccer) with a robot at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. He also paid a visit to the Meiji Shrine, contructed in honour of a former Japanese emperor. After the days activities Obama returned to the Imperial Palace for a state dinner with the emperor and empress.
In a news conference with the Japanese Prime minister, Obama stated that the U.S. will defend Japan and disputed islands.
He is set to continue his tour of Asian with South Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines.
