As of today Barak Obama became the first US president to have visited Malaysia in almost 50 years.
Following on from his stops in Japan and South Korea, Obama arrived at the Royal Malaysian Air Base, for the economic and security talks. After arriving to a red carpet greeting Obama was whisked away on a limousine to Kuala Lumpur’s Parliament square. Here he was greeted by cannon salutes as Mr. Najib Razak, the king of Malaysia greeted him beneath muggy skies..
Obama inspected the elaborate honour guard in crisp green and white as a military band played the US and Malaysian national anthems twice. His next stop was the Istana Negara, the National Palace, for an audience with Malaysia’s royal family he will then attend a a state dinner held in his honour on Saturday.
Obama will also meet with citizen leaders and hold a forum with young leaders from across the region. He has however declined calls from human-rights groups to meet the Malaysian opposition leader.
My main message is that the United States welcomes Malaysia’s growing contributions to regional security and prosperity
Mr Obama said.
