The mayor of Ukranian city Kharikev has been shot

Mr Hennadiy Kernes, mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has been shot and critically wounded as unrest continues to grow in the region.

He was shot in the back by unknown gunmen as he was out jogging. Presently he is undergoing emergency surgery in a fight for his life.

Mr Kernes was a supporter of the former pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych.Recently he has not shown any backing for the ousted president but has shows support for a united Ukraine.

Mr Keanes has been described from time to times as a

mini-oligarch

– a successful businessman wealthy enough to launch a career in politics.
