Times of India have reported that Google may be fined up to $5 billion by the Competition Commission of India.
In India, the commission has filed an antitrust investigation and if it is found that Google has violated anti-competitive laws of the country, then it would be facing heavy fines; even for Google.
Google has said it is extending full cooperation to the CCI in its investigation. A two-year review by the US antitrust watchdog has concluded that the company’s services were good for competition. It has been over two-years now that the case has been before the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and it relates to claim that Google is abusing its leading position in the internet search engine space.
This is one of the worlds most valued company and first filed the complaint against Google back in late 2011. It was filed by advocacy group CUTS International. Later, the matrimonial website; matrimony.com also filed a complaint.
Denoting to Google’s clearance with the European Commission, matrimony.com, counsel Ferida Satarwala said, “Google’s unfair use of trademarks as well as its retaliatory conduct are not specifically addressed in the European settlement and are distinct theories of harm being pursued by the CCI. Therefore, this settlement is unlikely to address CCI’s concerns in our case.”
