Google’s Matt Cutts spoke at SMX West last week, where he said that it wouldn’t surprise him, if mobile search surpassed desktop inquiries this year. A Google speaker casually made a similar comment during a roundtable discussion at the International Franchising Association conference, New Orleans.
Google was asked for an authorized statement; however, the company failed to provide one. Google does not want to compete with mobile and PC search; instead, it wants to highlight cross-platform marketing and experiences.
In many emerging countries, like India, mobile internet traffic has concealed the desktop.
The comments that are above relate to global query volumes, not in North America or US – where PC-based search exceeds mobile queries.
Internationally, mobile traffic is about 30% of all internet activity, which is also the case in North America.
Roughly, there are two billion PCs in the world with more than five billion mobile devices. Therefore, it is certain that both mobile internet traffic and mobile search will eventually exceed the PC internationally.
However, when it does happen, it will perhaps be a shock to some who still see mobile as a kind of secondary channel.
